Susan’s Story
Susan Munchinsky has an incredible spirit. It’s only been strengthened after two separate bouts with cancer.
“I’m more appreciative of every morning. I am more appreciative of my friends, our family, and the cancer centre. It just made me realize what a fragile and awesome gift life is,” said Susan Munchinsky.
The married mother of two and grandmother of three was first diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2008. In 2016 she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Susan knew something was wrong before her first diagnosis but being diagnosed with breast cancer was a surprise.
“I was getting a follow-up PET scan to make sure I was clear of free radicals. I call them dirty little bugs,” explains Susan. “They found out I had two spots that lit up the screen, one was in my breast, and one was on my rib.”
Over two bouts of cancer, the farmer from Sovereign Sk, about an hour and a half southwest of Saskatoon would become very familiar with the Saskatoon Cancer Centre (SCC). She would undergo chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries for both cancers.
She says they got to know the staff and volunteers very well.
“The volunteers would look at me and go ‘coffee black, we’re coming!'”
Munchinsky says she is very thankful for the care she received from the incredible staff at SCC.
“The nurses just had a way of letting you know you’re cared for, you are important to them,” says Susan. “They’re there to brighten your day and make this journey as easy on you as they could.”
Susan has experienced all aspects of the Saskatoon Cancer Centre and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. She encourages everyone to consider supporting the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
“They (SCC staff) never made you feel you were a burden, no matter how rushed they were. Anything you can give back to lighten their load is appreciated,” Susan says.
Susan’s health is good today. She attributes her health and attitude to her faith.
“I wear an eagle charm every day,” she says. “It reminds me He will lift me up on eagle’s wings, carry me on the Breath of Life, make me shine like the sun, and hold me in the palm of his hand.”
